5 month continues with some exciting news

4/29/2012

So God is sooo good! I am sorry I am not good at updating these days.  But I have working super hard, even my weekends.  But God is sooo good! So you know how sometimes you get in a funk, in terms of you are too scared to do anything or just almost give up on something. I was starting to get there with the center.  I mean, nothing really seemed to be working and time crunch issues and all these practical things coming to mind.  But God is so good.  He once again in His loving way reminded me that life isn't about being practical, its about following Him and when we do that, He does everything!
So one of my desires has been to teach medical students. I met one of the doctors here last year and he was talking about training medical students. One 2 one works with students and I love teaching medical students or really anyone who wants to learn medicine.  When I do medical camps my translators usually start seeing patients and I treat them as medical students after 4 medical camps or sooner if they are super good.  I remember in my zeal to teach Trylla how to do a good physical exam on a back I made a patient who had fallen off a tree lying on a truck sit up when he didn't want to.  Unknown to me he hadn't sat up in 1 month due to pain and when I forced him to do it God healed him! hehe! I didn't have to do any medical work!! I love how He works!! Anyways getting back on task.. So my new khmer teacher is a medical student.  I asked her if she wanted to work with me on the chabdai project and if she wanted to learn about medicine. She was sharing one day how she can't get clinical experience because they doesn't know the right people.  Medical care here is atrocious, so what better way to improve it than to train the ones who will be administering it! So I told her I would train her and her friends and this past thursday they came! We did blood pressure and pulse.  They said they want to do 2, 3 hours sessions a week with me! So our next session is tomorrow at 8 am.  Meaning my khmer lesson is being pushed up to 7am!!! AHHH! But I can do it.  I was just searching the web and found exactly what I need to help me teach them well.  In fact exactly what I wanted, I found! I love how God does that and I LOVE the internet and I love how people are so into education and put such good quality stuff on the web. So YAY! If any health care professional wants to come train let me know! And you may wonder how I will do it all, but three medical health care professionals here have already offered to help occassionally!!! YAY!!!  Any ob/er/gi/familly med/ped people interested in teaching!!! Please come and do it. I am sure we can arrange intense sessions and hopefully do a medical camp with you!
As for the chabdai medical project someone has volunteered to be the medical editor and I hear she is doing an amazing job with the stuff. I was really happy with what Nolan did but he said what she is doing is way better than that!! Also, I was having difficulty finding some pictures for the curriculum and one of the rhea girls volunteeered to help me.  So she not only found pics no one else could she is fixing them to meet my needs. So while I and the rest of the girls are watching a movie together, she goes upstairs and finishes her homework and then does my "homework!"  I love it! It so clearly shows anyone can make a difference.  A 13 year old girl is going to bless the nations because of her efforts! You are never too young!! I told her she could go on the website because this is just the beginning and her sister heard it and wants a volunteer job too now! :)  I am so bad at so many things and these girls are great with computers so I have just the task for her!! Am I blessed or what!
Next project update. So as you know I came here to start a center and maybe you have been wondering is that going to happen. I have certainly been wondering that, but yes!!! It is going to happen.  So my friend Kimmy sent me a message as soon as she got back from her malaysia/singapore trip and said she was free friday to come and do outreach.  Before she left I had told her that I would be doing outreach with Nolan, but because of Khmer New year our plans got ruined.  And then with my trip to America that is comign up I logically told Michael we would start outreach when I returned. hehe! But God obviously had different plans and used Kimmy to give me hope that this center can take off the ground! So she came and I asked her how she wanted to do it.  She looked at me shocked and a little nervous about how 2 girls were goign to go to a beer garden and order girls without looking totally weird.  :)  But after 30 minutes of debating and going back and forth as to whether we would do it and trying to get michael to come and do it with us, we decided to do it.  We couldn't find a tuktuk and so got on a motodop.  We didn't know where to do and asked him to take up to a beer garden but as he was passing them all i started to get concerned so he turned around and passed all the ones we had passed till we got to the first one.  We had prayed that God lead us and have a girl ready to hear.  So we get there and get off the motodop and there are girls lined up at the door sitting across from each other.  I want to show love and so like a weirdo shake everyones hands as I go in.  Apparently some girl said in Khmer that we were religious people who had come.  We sat down and Kimmy boldly asked how much for a girl. We were told they were free so she asked for 2 :)  We did a little chitchatting and then asked questions about their job.  They are making $65-70/month which is as good as a garment factory or better and so I commented about how great that was and they said the money was good but they didn't like the looks they get.  Some customers kiss them, fondle them and who knows what else. They said they are free to run away but of course then they get no tip.  One said she was taking tailoring classes in the morning and the other said she wants to better her life but everything is too expensive.  So we asked if they were interested in english and computer classes.  They said they dont even know their ABC's so I said no problem and had Kimmy tell me what we have to offer them for free!!! So one of the girls was bored and jaded or maybe just scared to get excited, but the other girl had such obvious joy, she kept saying how happy she was and she got extra cards to give her friends. So we are doing our first pick up on wednesday!!!! OH my goodness!!! I am soooooo excited!!! God is soo good!!! So much to do!! The car came at the perfect time!!!  It's almost ready for use! My older sister made an english curriculum and so we can start with that while we figure out what to do after basic abc's and reading and writing!! Any ideas anyone! Anyone want to volunteer teaching english! YAYAYAYY!
Lastly.  I was getting a little tired of just doing curriculum work so I asked God for some people interaction.  And so sunday my friend brought over a patient to consult with me about.  I skipped church to to go the hospital to see another one and then yesterday my old translator called me. He had message me 1 week ago to say that his brother had a bus fall on him (yes a 45 seater bus).  He was in the hospital.  I have never heard him sound dejected and I knew he really wanted me to come but didn't expect I would come at 7 in the dark.  So I asked the friend I was hanging out with to go with me and we went and saw the brother and gave some helpful hints and prayed with him and then talked to the patient next to him and helped them out with some encourage, prayer and medical advice and then he dropped me home.
You know in the bible it says "ask and you'll receive" and it really is that easy.  Just earlier this week I was talking to God and asking about the whole center thing and before that made my request about teaching medical students know and heeh! I am just soo blessed! You know if you have ever thought you can't talk to God about something or ask him for something, I even asked for pizza when I was in Japan and He gave it to me.  God cares about our every need, as insignificant as it may seem.  He is the perfect parent, older brother, mother, friend all rolled up into one!!!
thanks everyone for your support and everyone wanting to help let me know what you want to do because I probably need to you to do it and every little bit counts - that is why i love the starfish story on our front page :)

5th month

4/18/2012

Today was a superb day! I got next to nothing accomplished but it was full of fun and laughs. hehe! I almost fell off the motorcycle today and that made Michael and me laugh all the way home! I love Michael. What would I do without him.

I went to sleep at 1am last night. I got so into reading my kindle and have so been wanting to read - just plain fiction for fun that I couldn't stop.  It was a book one of my sister's had downloaded onto my kindle so I randomly started reading it but it ended up being a chrisitan mystery :) I love mysteries and the story was well done.  I was enjoying the book so much I preferred it to watching a movie even!
So slept at 1am and got up at 6:30.  But surprisingly I wasn't tired.  I just finished breakfast when my khmer teacher arrived.  She just finished and my landlord arrived.  He had come by the day before stating he was thinking of buying a new fridge for me that his relative won on a lucky draw.  Well last night he said he's been there in the afternoon and t hen at 8:30 he just arrived with my new refrigerator.  Well I was sooo happy!! I had made plans to do errands with michael at 9 but messaged him to delay them as I got my refrigerator set up! I had just been thinking I wanted a new one that wasn't all broken up or at least a bigger one and wala it appeared.  It is bigger and clean!!! and I can even make icecubes in it.  It has more than enough refrigerator space and I love it! Now I have two refrigerators.  This can only mean something is going to happen and i'll need separate refrigerators for something!! I am excited.  And he also said that he is going to bring me 2 used air conditioners! YAY!!! Now the boys don't have to suffer when they come to help!! I can't wait till those come! I am sooo blessed to have such a sweet landlord!  Praise God!
So after that we went to get the brakes fixed on my car.  I was a little weary of a mechanic wanting to rip me off and when he thought my brakes were fine, even more,b ut I insisted on a change and they found more damage than anticipated.  He fixed my engine light and the battery wire that kept causing things to die and even showed us where to get new front tires and all for 38 dollars!! It took 3 hours but he is so nice and sweet and his wife and daughter were great. I want to hire her daugther but I need to find something for her to do! Their baby son was the cutest!
I was late for my skype meeting but it went well and just had time to do my khmer homework before Michael came.  We did all my errands including getting groceries and headed off to meet my friends from Every nation church.  They had planned to come to my house but Michael wanted to take me out to a fancy dinner and so it made more sense for me to meet them since they live close to the school.  I had such a great time with them! Oh my goodness.  I didn't know what we were going tot alk about but God just did His thing and I ended up sharing a lot of stories of God's goodness, provision and faithfullness in Japan and as I was doing that I realized how much I missed that. What I love doing above all else is talking about God and how good He is!  Ended the short meeting with them with matchmaking and was off with michale but before I left they all prayed for me. I really do miss that aspect.  I have been so focussed on my projects I didn't even realize how much I miss the simple story telling and how much I learn and grow from that.  I asked God for mroe of that while i am here and at dinner we had one of Michael's students join us.
rest to be continued. I am falling asleep

Month 5 goes on

4/17/2012

Khmer new year is coming to a close. Today is finally the last day.  It's been a good little holiday.  It's been interesting with everything being closed how quiet everything has been and how non dangerous the streets have been.  Today things are starting to get busy again. I wish I had a camera on my sun glasses, i would get great shots. Today there was a group of 20 on the roof of a truck going down the street, I played chidken with a car and won because it was my right of way and made it home just before dark.

Nolan left saturday and I got a lot of work done.  Sunday I went to church and met the group from Every Nation church. I love those girls and they are coming over tomorrow so I had to go shopping to get food in the house to offer them :) It's been close to 100 degrees but I have decided to get back into shape since I do have to look good for the wedding pictures :) So the new plan is to go bike riding in the evenings.  I started on saturday  night.  I went to the local temple because I had heard there would be some sort of special mound their were making to celebrate. I went and didn't see anything but 2 little kids dancing. Ended up talking to a month and on Sunday he messaged me asking to come to the temple for a water thing they were doing for lay people. I thought it meant they were teaching people how to make water clean and so didn't want to go, but finally went and I was amazed at the crowd.  Just as I got there there were apsara dancers doing a peice.  The monk was at the top of the temple so I pushed through the crowd to the top of the stairs and sat infront of a huge water bucket with jasmine flowers in it.  I had only just said hello and exhanged a few khmer words with two girls near me when a man approached me and asked if I would be willing to be interviewed for TV. Never one to turn down an opportunity at stardom I immediately said yes.  So he asked me a few questions and then asked if I would be participating in water ceremony.  I said I didn't know what it represented and so the interview ended. But apparently it was aired at 7 pm on sunday and was on the internet as well :)
After the interview the reporter and I kept talking and he started explaining things to me.  Apparently on the 3rd day of khmer new year people come to the temple to be washed with the water from the monks. This cleanses their sins for the year and offers them luck for the year to come.  They had 2 fire hoses and a bunch of buckets and a crowd well over 1000 people. Everyone was so happy.  The police was smiling and talking to me, reporters were chatting, the monks were happy.  It was kind of like christmas.  So I stood on the stairs and watched and for over 30 minutes they kept spraying water on the people and no one left.  Everyone was squealig with joy and waiting for the water to come back. Some had water bottles ready in hopes of catching the water...maybe to take it home? I don't know.  After chatting with the reporter for a long time, getting a ton of pictures, I met up with Lucky the monk and we chatted. I went into the temple to see it and it was quite beautiful.  The walls and ceilings are covered with the story of buddha.  One of the prettier temples that I have seen.  Usually they are beautiful on the outside but not so ornate on the inside.  I'll try to post some pics since I took a ton :)  But it might be a while.
Sunday I thought I should invite the girls over the painting. They are always so happy to spend time at my house.  I didn't know how best to reach them and was mulling it over as I biked home after church and shopping for food and guess who was shouting my name as I was coming home.  So I invted them all over.  So after the water purification ceremony I went there and them they came over :)  We didn't paint but ended up watching 2 movies, eating popcorn, candy and doing our nails :)
The next day I showed up at their house with a movie, candy and the painting book.  They had just bought paints and paper and brushes since I didn't have enough and they all painted.
I had been a litte frustrated because I wasn't finding the kind of resources I needed or wanted for the women's health section, but today everything came together.  Group Health hospital has the perfect teaching material.  Maybe because I trained their, every picture, everything I wanted it there and it's just the way I want it done. It's wonderful. I would highly recommend their healthwise site to any of you wanting to do some self education on something.  So I have had a great day working on things! I love how God works.
My landlord came over.  He had some chocolate for me. I was wondering how to pay him for the next three months of rent and so it was perfect timing! While he was over I was able to give him a free medical consult and he ended up helping me with my car situation. His brother in law works in the department of transportation so can get all my stuff done for a reasonable price for the car without worrying about bribes and getting ripped off. I am soo happy about how God works!
This weekend has been great for reading. I have my kindle back and love reading the daily devotional every morning.  Helps set the mood of the day right and Nolan and I have been reading them together :)  I finished the book on aftercare programs so feel more ready for the logistics of stating ours.  I also started a book on my kindle.  I am enjoying it so much I don't feel like I need to watch as many movies.
So I had an ant infestion in Nolan's room and the kitchen and my room after my little party! So I prayed and cleaned. When I cleaned alone nothing happen, but God did manage to ger rid of my problem in the ktichen and Nolan's room.  Now I just have to pray for my room.  Until then I will just keep killing the ants as they crawl all over me.  Note to self, no more movie nights in my room.
There is also a manifestation of geikos! I dont mind them so much but today there was geiko poop all over my clean drying dishes. Ugh.  anyone know how to get rid of them.  The cockroaches are gone since Nolan brought the moth ball so yay!   Life in a third world country :) Gotto love it!
Actually I do love it!
Other than that, trying to figure out and juggle everything. Gotto finalized wedding stuff, the medical project, and start our center! Pray for more helpers!
Thanks for all your support, love and

Month 5 continues

God
is an awesome God! Nolan just left, which was sad! There is sooo much to do! My
family has picked an awesome venue and now I gotto figure out clothes etc So questions arise.  Do I fly to
india for a short trip to plan stuff.  I have so much  to do!

So we did our second outreach for the center yesterday.
We tried to go to beer gardens but everyone was closed for khmer new year
so we went for a massage. I knew of a good place that has no “clients” but it
was closed and we asked Michael to take us home, but Michael being Michael
wanted to make all our desires come true so we ended up at a place.
We walked in and went upstairs.
Three of us together! But since it was a foot massage I didn’t care.  We got upstairs and it was a shady
shady place.  The walls were painted red.  The room was dimly
lit.  Michael started talking to the girls and they work from 9am to midnight.  They all came from the province.  Their dreams are to start a business.  They get two days off a month.  They have no skills.  They want their lives to change but
have no options.  They openly stated they have clients if they want.  They get paid 50 dollars + tips and get room and board.
We gave out our cards and offered the free medical care.  Don’t see how they can avail themselves to anything else.
Pray for them and for us.

I’m excited about getting done with my first aid curriculum.  Now it’s onto women’s health.  I think with everything
being closed for the next few days I will get a lot of work done!!

I bought some movies a couple of days ago to go with my new tv
until I get cable after new years eve.  Gotto get my brakes fixed for my car too! I’m excited.
Everything is perfect.

The 5th month takes off

4/12/2012

It looks like my internet device after many issues is working, at least in my room! So maybe I can start blogging again regularly :)
Today we did our first official outreach. Nolan made cards to pass out - one side in Khmer and one side in English.  He has been wanting to do outreach but somehow I have been tired, or Michael has been busy or there has been some reason not to do it, but today the cards got printed and off we went.  All three of us on a motorcycle.  The beer gardens were pretty scant in terms of girls or occupants. Yesterday as we were coming back from the airport we saw two bored girls desperately wanting someone to come in and so today we just had to go!! As we were headed there we saw 4-5 girls on the railroad track.  We passed them since we had a mission in mind, but after passing a few nearly empty beer gardens we went back and passed them out.  It was interesting.  There were guys on the other side watching, one even came up as we were explaining what we were doing and handed them a card.  The girls didn't know what to think. Here was a girl between two guys.  They would look from me to Nolan but at the end smile and say akkun/thank you.  So we decided to head out to reach the street girls instead of the beer garden girls.  But as we were passing by we saw a really full beer garden and turned around to go back but when they saw me they said they were full :(  hehe! but that just means tomorrow we know just where to go! :) (minus me of course).  We probably passed out 10 cards and then called it a night. I think God just kind of picked out outreach and place to go.  I had thought IU area instead of Toul Kork, but as it was, that is what He picked for this outreach and tomorrows. So they must need it more :)  Pray for us as we start! I am super excited and just want to be able to help the men, women and children. It was sad, cause even the pimps are so young.  I was a little suprised how old some of the girls were and also saddened by how young others were.  But really it was how young and innocent and sweet looking the pimps were.  That is what suprised me the most.
Other than that, my mop works really well.  Nolan mopped my whole bottom floor.  I am thinking of getting a maid.  The two-four hours I spend cleaning every week can be spent working instead. I have been holding out but it's all starting to get too much.  Apparently given how cheap it is to have a part time maid everyone has one, but I have wanted to do it all myself.  :) but there is a lady who needs a job and I am into streamlining because I have a LOT to do! Anyone interested in helping put together the curriculum - writing/pictures or editting? Any social workers, counsellors, grant writers, teachers or entrepreneurs out there?

The 5th month begins

4/10/2012

First of all, let me apologize for not writing! there has been so much going on and I haven't had internet, but I think I have all the kinks worked out.  I don't even know where to start as to what has been going on!!!
So first of all, on April 1st, no April's fool joke, I got engaged!!!  I met Nolan online 8 months ago as I was finishing my stint at camp korey and finalizing things for coming to cambodia.  We met two weeks after we started talking and my family screened him for me :) That involved an over 6 hour session where he met each member of my immediately family and then watched one debrief me as the others continued their questioning :) I drove the poor guy to his hotel at midnight :)
Two weeks later I just happened to be flying through LA on my way to hawaii and so my parents flew down to meet his family :)  The next day they were ready for me to marry him :)  We talked on the phone for a month in Japan in between the million people I wanted to say goodbye too :) Met up three more times and then I came to Cambodia :) We have been talking everyday and he's been one of my biggest supporters with Save Each One, finding me board members, helping me think things out, fundraising, marketing etc :)  So one of the things I love are surprises.  On Christmas even though my friends would give gifts before break started, I never openned them till christmas because I wanted the surprise.  But Nolan would always tell me what he was going to do or had just done -  sending flowers every week or even the 100 flowers he sent me before I left.  So I didn't think he was a secret surprise kind of guy :) But I was wrong. He totally convinced me we were going to go to paris to be engaged and then planned a romantic engagement in Phuket.  Even that was a surprise. Till the day he arrived (the day before we left) I thought we were going to go to Angkor Wat, but he had to tell me I needed my passport and convinced me we were going to indonesia :) hehe! I didn't know where we were going till we got to bangkok!!!
The last day we had a "special dinner" on the beach - a table right out of an indian movie scene and then he asked me to walk on the beach with him.  As we were walking, there was a sign in lights on the beach - "Will you marry me" and when I turned to Nolan, there he was on one knee proposing!!!

hehe! So I am engaged and set to be married probably December 30th in India :)

As for everything else,  I have been busy busy busy.  I have had 4 teams since I got here in 4 months! Each one is a blessing and takes a lot of time out of my schedule but as I get more established the work they do is more and more focussed in helping.  I wrote out part of the curriculum for the Chabdai medical project and Nolan has made my word document a real manuel with adding pictures and making it everything I didn't have the skills or time to try to do :) YAY!

The center is progressing. Been going to more meetings and getting more information. Its interesting how much information gathering one has to do to get all the information.  All this time I have been thinking a local NGO is the way to go, but now I am finding out as I talk to other people that an international NGO is definitely the way to go and I might have just found a way to make it happen!! If not we might partner with another group here!  Nolan also made me cards to connect with the women.  It is so much nicer than I could have done and he did it sooo fast! So when we get back from vietnam today he is going to go out with Michael and try to reach out to them. We are going to offer free medical care and computers and english to start with.  I may have a helper as well! I decided to do private lessons for Khmer.  I felt like I was wasting too much time in the khmer class and not getting enough practice speaking and so Michael found me a medical student and she's great. I have learned so much in the week I have had her! And she wants experience so she is wanting to help me with the chabdai project!! Chabdai wanted a female Khmer doctor to take over after me. I might have found them just the person!

We arrived in Vietnam 2 nights ago and got a tour of the city yesterday. Our guide was not the best guide, but we got to talk to him a lot and he is a great person and so we might be able to set up a few medical camps in vietnam and maybe a future clinic!! Any grant writers out there! We need you! :)  Let me know if anyone is interested in doing some free medical care in vietnam or wants to help write grants.

Loc also took me around Ho Chi Minh city to look for things I have wanted to price for business ideas for a social entrepreneur project with the women.  Much better prices than Cambodia but I just have to figure out details! So everything is coming together!!!

God is sooo good! I have my kindle back and reading my daily devotional everyday has been great for slowing me down in the morning and putting things in the proper perspective!

Oh! I just got a tv!!! With my laptop gone all my brainless entertainment disappeared.  But cable is only 50 dollars for 6 months so I got a tv and will get cable :) I just bought curtains too! So the house is turning into a home :) My ktichen is getting set up and I have finally managed to cook a good dish.  I started getting free guitar lessons from my friend Kimmy.  Life is just good! I updated the website with new information and put a lot of things that we need help with. If you guys want to help I could certainly use it!!! let me know!!! h
