Sept Week 4 continues

9/25/2012

So God is great! The camp was amazingly good.  On Sunday the students came and packaged meds while I was gone to church.  I thought they would be all done by the time I came back, but they hadn't labelled anything :( So luckily I left church early and so I was able to help them label things and was only 30 minutes late to my lunch date :)  Kimmy and I had fun like usual and I was going to go pick up una, but michael offered, so I could go home and rest. I was asleep before 9 and was up bright and early for camp.  The students had said 6:40, so I was waiting. I think we didn't leave till 7:30, but it was great.  On the way I thought my car would run out of gas so got the cheap stuff on the side of the road since we had passed all the real gas stations.  The car got stuck on a bad road and 4 people 4 people had to leave the car to lighten the load.  But we made it! And it was good!
Got there and Dr. T had been waiting for us.  He was worried this is the village everyone goes to, but it was different, so YAY.  There were tons of kids already there.  We started registration. Rina and Chumran came and I put them in charge of that with two other girls I don't know.  4 medical students were doing blood pressures and 5 inside seeing patients.  Maggie and Catherine manned the pharmacy and Tharanga, Una and I were the attendings.  I have to say, after the initial confusion, it was a great camp.  We registered 119 people total.  We had stopped at 100 so we would be sure everyone would be seen but at the end a few straggled in.  We saw 77 patients total and the students got great practice on diagnosis and exam and some on presentation and we learned a lot about how to put a camp together and make it work. We had an over abundance of volunteers and it was great. Rithy did a super job! :)  Can't wait till the next one and Una has a chance to teach them the stuff they didnt learn.  The german medical students were super happy cause they got a chance to actually see patients and they got to hook up with tharanaga who was looking for volunteers for flood relief victims for this week! So yay! I love how God works! :)
Today was great. Both una and I were tired and we went to teach at RI. Their last session. It was great even though it was rushed.  They learned a lot and absorbed it fast. Their feedback was great and the same as WHI.  hehe! Came back and had time to make lunch and then the kids came.  It was great.  Michael was gone to a funeral so just me to teach and Una to help.  I have been wondering if B is dyslexic. he's super smart but can't seem to read right and reads God for dog.  Una read with him and felt the same way.  So luckily I just found out someone is dyslexic and so can get tips on how to help.  Also C has a speech impediment and so Una just told me her sister knows how to help so we are going to take a video and send it to her! :)
Went to B's graduation ceremony. Totally didn't want to go.  I get so lazy after a busy day. Actually took a 30 minute nap today and felt so good.  Kyung suk had brought over vegetarian kimchi and so all I had to do was make rice and we had dinner.  The rain stopped so we went!  It was great.  So well done. I want to do something like that for our kids when they graduate.  (or kids of course range from 13-25 :)
God is good! :)

4th Week begins

9/22/2012

Happy Birthday Nolan!
Two more days till the camp! YAY! tomorrow the students come to sort the meds and place them in bags :)  I think we will have too many volunteers :) but how can I say no to anyone.
Two days ago a missionary died here.  He used to go to a small cambodian pool and play with the poor cambodian children there.  Apparently he had a heartattack and fell into the water.  The kids thought he was messing around but realized something was wrong when his body started floating.  They called for help but of course he was already dead and the security guard didn't know cpr.  The fmaily didn't find out until 2 hours later.  I didn't know him but Michael knew him well and is quite shaken up.  The man was 53 and loved by a lot of people.  MIchael has been having bad dreams for days now about old people dying and poor guy is really scared about who is going to die next.  Pray for him to get over his fear and that he not in any way feel anyone is dying because he isn't praying enough because of course that isn't the case.  I have never seen him like this before.  :(  Pray for the family as well.
So my car has been steaming and when I picked Una up from the airport was making weird sounds when I turned it off. So today as I was driving her there I told Michael I need to see a mechanic and told him the problem.  He had e stop the car and was going to put water in it and I just wasn't sure. I've seen it in Indian movies, but given my air conditioning wasn't working I figured we needed coolant in there.  So Michael called his old house father and apparently it's both. So we stopped at a gas station and we bought a can - looked like pop and none of us knew what to do with it and so the guy there did it for us :) It was a neon green color.  Interesting.  Una, Michael and I learned something new  and we still made it to the airport in time.
Driving during the day is much harder through the back roads. Everyone goes every which way, but we made it without a problem :) Back tomorrow to pick her up.
Yesterday the group learned about burns. They remembered fire safety so I was happy :) We had 2 new people join.  Daugthers of beer garden workers.
Today for church we learned how nothing is impossible for God.  It was pretty good but we got done very early. Michael brought vutai, a little 5 year old whose mom I saw in a make shift medical camp I did 2 years ago.  She died and now a nice government offical is taking care of her.  So she comes to church every now and then and today it was so cool to watch her worship.  Everyone likes to sing Open the Eyes of my Heart in English and I was surprised to see her singing away! She knew the words, tune, eveyrthing! The new favorite song that I taught them last week is "I could sing of your love forever".  Since we got done early I decided to have the girls (only the girls came) share 3 good things about themselves.  It was interesting to watch.  They were so nervous and couldn't come up with stuff and it was great to have Una there to be able to share good stuff about herself and then them say she wasn't bad for saying it.  That openned them up a little bit and they were able to share stuff.  It's interesting how most Asian cultures aren't into compliments and yet they are so important to building self esteem.  Pray for them all :)

3rd week in sept

9/20/2012

Happy birthday Dad! :)
Woke up early today and was able to call dad thanks to my sister and nolan. Woke him up but :)
Had a bible study before that and it was great! :) Just what I needed.
Then we were all off. Una came 2 days ago and yesterday she crashed at 5.  I was so tired, I fell asleep at 8 myself.  Late night at the airport. :)
So we accomplished a lot this morning. Made it to the post office, interviewed 2 people for a position with us as teachers, bought the medicines for the camp, got quotes on tickets for Una's trip to Siem Reap on saturday and came home just in time to eat before english class started.  English class was great.  Una prefers one on one teaching to infront of the class and as it turned out, God gave lots of opportunity for her to do that today.  More than usual!  Then I got to finish a lot of work while Una and Michael went to get the tickets.  It was good!
She came back and I took her to withdraw money.  I found it by mistake looking for a pharmacy and praise God, i love how mistakes turn into blessings.  Then we ate and had just enough time to finish more work before we went to the beer gardens.  I was hoping to do a fast run but we ended up being out for over 2 1/2 hours.  But we had a lot of people we befriended.  Hopefully they really will show up tomorrow! Pray for them. One might even bring her daugther.
Another 14 hour day, but full of God's blessings :)
Pray for me, our camp this monday, Michael, the center

Sept 3rd week

9/18/2012

Its been a long time since I wrote. Time flies and I have been super busy.  So this weekend I was just not feeling good. Too much work last week and I was just exhausted so I prayed and asked God t change my tempermant and wow! things are so different. I woke up feeling different and things are stressing me out at all. :)  I have a ton of appts and things to do, but everything seems manageable instead of ready to tip me over the edge hehe! So praise God! must ask for that more often.
Class is great. I have it in my head from the last week that I want one of the girls to start teaching so today I actually had her start. Of course she is timid and doesn't want to correct, but I think with some time of working with me and practicing we can make it work. In two days I will go meet some potential people to work for us and another really good person wants to possibly work for us too! YAY!
We are doing our first real big medical camp since I got here. The medical students are putting it together and the 4 of them have got nearly 13-14 volunteers. So with the Rhea girl's, two of our students and Michael. We have more volunteers than we need :) I'm excited because this means we will do more! I think we can do one every month! :) The students want to really do stuff. They are on board to do medical education and are training their friends to do that! We will see 100-200 patients. Tharanga has agreed to help me preceptor the students! I'm so excited for them. Gotto go shopping for meds on thursday! I'm so excited! Pray for us!
Yesterday I got to teach at a school! I love how everything I want keeps happening!! Now I am thinking of going into more schools.  The kids were spongers and already knew a lot more than all the adults I have been teaching.  I had been wanting to teach some extra stuff like helmet safety and smoking hazards but I was told the staff would be there too and so fingered there was no time.  Well I started prepping last week anyways and then I was told the staff backed out and only students! Earlier in the week I had taught the clients at a shelter and they were great! 41 students and they weren't shy at all despite it being women's health.
Today's training went really well as well.  It was the general medical stuff and the staff was really learning stuff and it being my second time, it all flowed so much better and this group didn't already know about STD's so it was great. They asked great questions as usual and I didn't get done as usual! But hehe! I think we will get done next week!
I love how the whole project is going.
In a few hours a resident is coming to stay a month.  What perfect timing.  Is God good or what! Medical camp monday and medical team comes in and starts on wednesday!

Week 2 Sept

9/11/2012

God is good! He never ceases to amaze me. It takes
just a moment and he changes your heart and helps you have one more like His.
When we trust in Him, He makes everything good.

This week, its only Tuesday has been hard. I didnt
have Sunday off and so its been trusting in God.  After class today I was ready
to drop.  I had been planning to go to the graduation of one of the centers but
although I felt awful about not going, I wasnt going to make it.  Hehe! And then
I realized it is in 2 weeks! So I had just the time I needed. I was able to eat
and watch a movie and rest!!! So now I can start working again.  I love how God
knows just what we need to recharge us.  He really does take care of everything.
I was running out of water and since I didnt have to go, was able to get it
delivered. I was sure with the rain, they wouldnt come, but they did!!  So
yay!!! Cold water and enough for class tomorrow!  It started raining during
class and so the students stayed an hour later.  It was great cause before I
came the first time I brought books  like brain teaser stuff but havent wanted
to take the time to do those in class since we have so much more to learn.  So
guess what they did during the time they were waiting for the rain! YAY! God is
sooo good!
Oh and training was really good despite me not feeling prepared. the feedback was awesome! I am offii

So pray for teachers. The girl I wanted just got a
job.  L I was too slow in offering her a job.
Bummer cause I really liked her.  Pray we find someone else.

But the best thing was the day before yesterday.  So I
spent the morning doing everything I didnt get done over the weekend and then
had class. I had asked Michael to call L and D but he said he wanted us to go in
person at 7 instead.   I knew I would be tired, but said ok.  Class was good. R
is doing so much better.  She is catching up.  I got called in the morning to go
meet the medical students who want to have a bible study.  So didnt do the after
school class and went there instead.  Met a guy there who is interested in
medical teams so gave him my info.  Met the girls and since Michael gave me a
ride there was stuck there until 7.  But God is good.  I met some 5th year medical students from Germany who are here to do a
rotation but are totally bored.  So I asked them to come to our medical camp and
they are thrilled! And they are doing a talk on history taking so my students
can go and learn before the camp and be better historians! I have to teach less!
YAY!   And the resident who is coming wants to teach them too! So yay again!  So
Michael picked me up and we went to Happy Holidays and there was L.  She was
happy to see me.  We asked her to come and why hadnt she been coming.  She said
she would be all alone there.  She said D had changed her number and couldnt get
a hold of her.  We sat and talked and little more and then I dont know why but I
said, I havent given up on you, please dont give up on yourself.   Everything
changed.  She said she will come after she moves in 1-2 days and she even called
D.  Gosh, just believing in someone, giving them hope, changes everything doesnt
it

Week 2 in September

9/9/2012

What a busy weekend! :) I think it was more tiring than the week :) But I can say we can do all things through Christ who strengthens us! :) Makes you appreciate the little things. :)  Like this milk I bought the second time I went was 1/2 off again and it's this oat/fresh milk thing and it's so good! hehe! It adds a little extra flavor to my chai every morning and I love it!  Or the talk on skype when you are so tired you want to ignore altogether but it blesses you.  Its so hard to know the balance between extending yourself when you are maxed out and trust God vs being wise with your time, but as I writing this I think the key is trusting God to be more than enough.  When we try to do it in our own strength it doesn't work, but if we follow Him and do it in His strength, then we can do it without stress, worry or breakdown.  I have been working just as hard here as I was in Japan but in Japan it was so easy and here I get irritable.  I think the main thing is who am I trusting. There I couldn't do anything. I just had to trust God and love people.  Here I can do so much but I have finally realized I just have to trust God nonetheless :)

So, exciting news! Our real medical camp in the province since I got here!!! The medical students were over yesterday and so we are taking advantage of the holiday that is coming Sept 24 and we are going to do the camp! :) YAY!!! I got more medicines from Nolan's friend and so I just need to sort through everything and sunday I will teach them what all the meds are for. We worked out how we are going to do it and they are so excited and so am I.  Just the other day one of the Rhea girls interested in becoming a doctor was saying she wanted a volunteer project and hehe! Here it is :) And I was wanting my resident coming for her international rotation to be here and now she will and it's just before the ARMS team comes. So YAY!! things are really perfect!!!

So Saturday Michael and I had the big talk saturday about the future of the center and it was soooo good!  We are both on the same page with the same heart.  Both our dreams will come true and there is room for each of us to move on and keep the center going! Is God good or what! :) I have to say I was a little nervous but it was really good for us.  We really got to talk.  I just love his heart.

I just got a call from Gateway asking when I was free to meet the medical students who want me to lead them in a bible study :) So just when I thought I didn't have time for more, there is! This week has potentially 4-5  trainings! One of the centers will end tomorrow and I haven't even gone over the material since America where I finished it. hehe! But another thing to do today and I am so excited.  I am excited to see what God has instore.

This saturday I led church.  I had planned on something else, but in the morning I spent some time with God (which was sooo good!  I think without it I wouldn't have made it through the weekend) I decided to share my testimony.  I then asked them to share their life story.  I was really surprised at their reactions to each others stories and how much pain is in the group, even in the guys.  It breaks your heart.  I was also surprised that R volunteered to share her story.  She actually had to leave school when she was 13 and in 2nd grade.  Her family had financial difficulties.  Then she started attending church and started to believe and her parents threatened to disown her.  She found out about a center that provided vocational training.  She wanted to go and her parents refused but she went and she was disowned from the family.  She prayed for reconcilation and her family has reconciled :) She is really happy she is where she is now.  I know she left a lot of details out, but I was so impressed she shared. I have never seen her so rapt with attention as she was when I was sharing my testimony and after hearing hers I see why.  When I went over to the Rhea's yesterday she was beaming.  She's learning to read, growing in God and happy.  It really is about Saving Each One and I love it!

Yesterday was super busy.  Church in the morning, rushed home and ate and the medical students came and I got a consult call at the same time.  The students were over for over 4 hours! AHH! we were all so tired but I think with a little more work and practice they will make amazing trainers and can take over for me. I was impressed. They worked hard and memorized and did really good. I am looking forward to taking them to the places and starting.  I even sent out an email asking one of the shelters if they will be guinea pigs for them :) And I think I can line up another! :) And with Michael running the center soon without me, I can do more with them :)

Of course all work makes me tired so both saturday and sunday God had me go meet people just to relax. No agenda.  And eventhough I didn't want to, I am glad I went.  It was just what I needed to be reset :) Yesterday I lost horribly at sorry and made a lot of people angry as I viciously sent them back home when they were almost safe. hehe! loved it! No mercy! :) hehe!!

I love my life! I think the mouse has disappeared and even the lixa

Sept - first week continues

9/7/2012

Another day down. Every day is awesome and wonderful! So I forgot to mention that yesterday I went to training and of course wanted to use the restroom before starting my 4 hour training.  Now in cambodia you always take your shoes off before you enter so my shoes were downstairs.  So I run to the restroom expecting slippers there or a normal toilet and to my dismay :( (squatty potty with no slippers) So in true missionary style I went but guess who washed the bottom of their feet with soap at home :)

So last night I had a busy day. i was doing bible study with someone on Skype till 11:15pm and woke up early, BUT it was a fabulous day.  Went to return a book that was long overdue and felt pretty bad cause it was supposed to be returned a month ago but because of a misunderstanding it was still home! So I went there just wanting to apologize but it ended up being a great meeting where my friend was so helpful and is wanting to help us with other curriculum like the typing! I'm so excited how God works. We might even have more volunteers or possible staff coming out the meeting!
then I went to the market to buy fruit! Week's worth of fruit for less than 3 dollars! Is that cool or what!
Then the center time started and we taught on fire safety and had the extra session with R and the little girl and it was good. One of one I see that R knows a lot more than she lets on so it's good! I can call on her with confidence now in class!  Afterwards the outside cleaning lady was there so I gave her a glass of water and she was beaming.

September 06th, 2012

9/6/2012

God is good! So today the day started with training. We were on the road by 7:30am.  Got to training and ended up in the wrong building, but luckily they weren't ready for us so we had time to set up :) Training was great! They knew a lot and so asked questions that no one else has asked and so training went longer then expected.  But had a great time and the doctor liked it so much she recommended I do it in private schools. I of course said I wanted to do in khmer schools so she is going to get me set up in a school! Am I blessed or what! Dream come true again.
Came home and and just had time to eat and then the class started.  R was looking like she was going to cry today, but I had asked her to stay after to go over stuff.  It seemed like she wasn't getting and it and then in the last 10 minutes, it just clicked and she got it! She apparently came home and was very happy.
While class my landlord came over with the air conditioners! So I stayed afterwards and got a lot of work done! Then came over to the rheas.  Was called by a kid who wanted to come over for medical care and said his house parents wanted to meet me. The Rheas know them so I went over.  Got to go there and put there mind to eat. I think I am over jet lag now :) it's nearly 9 and I am still at the Rheas :)
And action packed day but sooo good.
On the way to the rheas the motodop driver gave me a free ride again and I was hoping I would get a chance to see him cause I need him to give me a ride tomorrow to return some stuff and michael is busy.

Sept week 1

9/5/2012

I can't believe how fast things are going. So I thought I would have a week to recuperate but no. hehe! So I have hit the ground running and jet lag seems to be the worst it has ever been.
I got in late Saturday night and didn’t get to bed till late but got up in time for church and had a tiring but good day with the rheas.  Monday I had to get up early cause my medical students were coming. I got up early and was able to start cleaning, organizing, ordering water, trying to find the guy who brought my luggage and coordinate the week.  So the luggage guy came by right before the students.  I wasn’t sure why they wanted to come but they were over to learn to teach! When I left they were scared to teach, but Dilanga took them with him and had them teach and so they are open to the idea now and actually excited. So I went over the material with them and Saturday we will test it out! :) So I think they can start training the 5th shelter :) Will just get them up to speed in this next month.  They have done a fabulous job in translating the stuff so far and after talking to Michael I think they will do a great job doing the rest.  After they left I had a chance to talk to Nolan on the phone as he fell asleep and then the students arrived.  The class has changed a lot.  So I have the guys, R and then 4 other students.  Two are sisters of a girl involved in prostitution and a boy who lives with them and then the other is a an orphan girl.  I’m not sure what I think about this mix or the addition of the two kids.  This isn’t how I planned the center.  Maybe we are going to turn into a prevention center.  I meet with Michael to discuss our future.  He’s done a great job managing all of them while I have been gone.  He’s got them working on art projects, and they have gone through a chapter of the curriculum.  AFter that I went to Dr. D's to get 22gigabytes of info he has for teaching medical students.
Tuesday I got up at 2am hehe! and went to gateway cafe to use the internet only to find out that they had to close that day because of construction on the road, but they let me go in and get some stuff done.  I had promised Dr. D that I would come help them pack for their return to america for a year and so I went over. BUT Mrs D had been locked out and so I sat with her for 40 minutes and biked back. But I got a flat.  So I was walking my bike and guess who appeared? One of the tuk tuk drivers! And he gave me a free ride to the bike shop.  They said they couldn't fix it and so I walked home.  I got my tuktuk driver a cold coconut but couldn't find him.  Class started and I felt a little lost as to what they had covered and knew.  Michael has done a great job. We have a new student.  Another guy from the beer garden!! I went to the rhea girl's basketball game and ate dinner with them and although I wanted to stay up, just couldn't and fell asleep before 8 :)  My motodop driver saw me walking home from the rhea's and insisted on dropping me off.
Today I started off with medical training. It was good to be back.  They were all so happy to see me. Kind of surprised me.  Came home and was ready for bed, but class was great. I was able to get all these great ideas as I taught and really liked it.  I had a great time and was able to make it fun too :) One of my students is behind and I see her struggling.  So I offered to give her an extra class after class.  Still haven't had my meeting michael. hehe! i would say he is avoiding it, but I think he is busy :)
So what I realized is, that i miss spontaneous acts of kindness.  Today I got to do three, little things, but they meant so much more to me than a lot of what I do.  I gave my motodop driver a glass of water when he arrived. He would never ask, but I figured if I was thirsty he must be.  A while back I saw the grounds cleaning lady and just felt bad for her so gave her a water bottle and some food.  So I saw her again today and offered her water and instead of being shy, she so happily accepted it.  It did my heart good to be able to do such a simple thing and yet how many times have I not stopped to do something so simple.  Then as I walked to the Rheas I saw the tuktuk guy and went back to get my coconut :) He was so happy! I think I have to make a point of doing that more often.
So i got to the rheas and I got a call from my landlord! He's coming tomorrow with air conditioners!!! YAY!
ok, got to go! Keep praying for us. so many changes

September begins

9/2/2012

Back in Cambodia. Been gone a month for personal reasons, but back and getting back in tot he swing of things. It's great to be back! My room of lizard poop free! Don't know how it happened.  I had someone staying here for a few days and I think she must have done something.
The center is still 10 strong and 4 of the girls haven't been coming.  So it'll be great to see everything tomorrow.  I was over at the Rheas and R was there and was so happy to see me and even spoke English to me! :)
My trip back home was good.  I came back early but still got a ton done.  I wanted to come back friday but felt guilty so booked for wednesday and kind of told God that if he was ok with friday he would have to do something. So guess what! there was a typhoon in korea and my flight on wednesday got cancelled and so I came friday!  But I lost my window seat :( so they gave me 2 seats in the center instead and I got to sleep! and not only for one flight but both (even the one I had a window seat for!) God is great!
So my flight was late and I am without luggage but for the first time in a long time I packed an extra set of clothes.  God really thinks of everything! :)
I was wondering how all my trainings would work out on return, but yesterday I got the last email confirming everything and while I have been gone my medical students have been working hard and getting stuff translated.  I just love how well everything is going.
Even the little things. My house was without any good when I got home and I went shopping at the shopping mall cause the market was too far and was expecting to pay atrocious prices but I got everything almost at market prices. I was shocked and even saved on milk! God is sooo good!
Anyways, good to be back home.
