Month 3

2/14/2012

Feb 12th 2012

Time is just flying. It’s almost time for everyone to go back, only 8 more days.  Even Kaley has almost been here for 1 week! It’s been great having the whole team here! I love them and they take such good care of me and I don’t feel like I have to be formal with them at all.

On Monday I was thinking that I didn’t have anything for Kaley to do.  I had told her this may happen, but I still wanted her to have a good time here.  And God is sooo quick to answer.  So Sunday night she arrives and Monday I am talking to a classmate I never talk to and she tells me her friend is doing something similar to what I want to – but she works with sexually abused kids.  Tuesday ended up being a surprise holiday and so no class.  So at 9pm I text this lady and she wants to meet at lunch! Because of the holiday I agreed to see patients at the daughter’s of Cambodia clinic.  They shot me an email asking for help a few weeks ago and the nurse and I met up recently and we decided I could help them.  She really wanted me to spend a morning in clinic and I didn’t know when that would work out but since I was free in the morning I offered and that just happens to be the morning she comes to clinic so praise God!  So Michael and I got up early and took off.  Imagine my horror at remembering as I am getting ready that my English student will be coming to the house at 9am and I am scheduled at Daughter’s at 8! But God is sooo good! Kaley was up when I got out and so she agreed to teach her J  I love how God works everything out!

Got to Daughters and filled out paperwork and then texted the director asking if we could meet up some time.  She said she wants to meet and help us start a center- she has ideas already! They are moving this week so let’s see what happens with that J But I loved clinic! It’s exciting going into something that has already started and being able to look at it with fresh eyes and be given total freedom to change things.  There are so many plans in my head.  I got to see a few patients and Casey was really happy because the people really opened up and shared things they don’t normally.  I love taking a long time with patients and have this bad habit of asking is there anything else. Hehe! I used to be 30-60 minutes behind when I worked so old habits die hard J I loved seeing the patients. Each one with a really different problem.  We even had a dog bite.  I got to learn a lot about culture. For dog bites here, they put chilli pepper and rice into the wound from the dog owner’s house and that is supposed to heal you.  So this poor woman had had an overnight treatment of this and the pain she was in was pretty excruciating.  I felt so bad for her, but we were able to wash it out, send her for rabies and tetanus shots and give her some pain meds.  I didn’t know the cheap antibiotic for her so had to go home to look it up J Which of course brought up the whole issue of what the clinic should stock.  One girl came in needing glasses, which apparently costs 30 dollars.  That can be close to 1/3-1/2 month’s salary.  So of course she wasn’t going to do that but we ended up talking for nearly 1 hour about all these other things.  The khmer measure by using body parts.  She had been losing weight and so I asked the obvious question, “what do you eat every day.”  Her answer was rice and fish. When I asked her how much fish she said what sound like “toh” sized.  I assumed that mean toast sized but was quickly corrected that that it meant toe sized.  Kind of changes things doesn’t it.  J  At least I had a reason for her wt loss, skipping meals and eating that will certainly cause anyone to lose weight.  You know what the sad part was, she was skipping her meals because she works at Daughter’s restaurant and although she has a lunch break, when she sees a customer that sits on her table, her work ethic  causes her to not make them wait.  So we worked through that and the clinic khmer representative will go to the next meeting and make sure the girls are forced to take their breaks! J I had a great time and rushed home for appt with Debbie.

Debbie is the director of the shelter I wanted Kaley and Haley to help out with. She came to check us out but of course loved us J after all, what’s not to love and then invited us right then and there to her shelter and arranged with Kaley and Haley times for them to come.  She liked what they were doing so much they also asked them to teach her team their techniques so that they can continue to minister to the girls when they leave! I love how even though Save Each One doesn’t have it’s own center or shelter started, we are being able to equip and train so many other shelters and centers.  I got to see a patient for them and Transitions contacted me on Saturday and wants me to work with them as well  and help them on the medical side.  There is just so much to do! J I am so glad that God is using all our much needed talents to help even more people than we thought we would be able to influence and provide care for and not just in a way that when we are gone the help ends, but actually equipping and training them at so many levels.  I love it! J

Coming home Wednesday or Thursday I got a call from House of healing, a ministry of New Life Church that houses and cares for people who need it from the provinces.  It’s run by a nurse and she’s got a real heart from for patients and families. I was impressed by how nice and clean the house is and how well things are done.

Time flies.  So it’s already been a week.  I got a follow-up call from House of healing for one of the patients.  I didn’t expect it, but it was great! I thought I scared them off with how long I took seeing the patients there but I guess not J

Time has just been flying by! I don’t even know what happens and the day is done! I went to meet up with the Chabdai director yesterday and it was really good. I think this project is definitely a go at so many levels.   They are not only interested in doing the whole shelter thing but getting me involved in community based programs as well. How cool is that! So just pray for me and wisdom and efficiency.

I met up with the Daugther’s nurses just now and we came up with a small list of things to do.  It’s interesting what a wealth of information they have in themselves.  So I encouraged them to put it down on paper for each other.  J I love delegating.

So for a little bit I have been itching in my head.  Last week I was thinking, I think I have lice.  It was starting to feel just like it did when I had it last time.  I had just decided to self treat and then that night I went over to the rheas because I had heard that Mrs. Rhea was sick and she had Catherine check my head.  Diagnosis confirmed! So Friday we spent the day doing laundry and treating ourselves J  I went to the pharmacy to get the permethrin and the first one didn’t have it.  The 2nd one offered me antidandruff medication, an antifungal and a funny looking homemade bottle of the “right” stuff.  I made all 4 of us use it and I was the last one to take a shower at night.  Um, I think it was gasoline! Michael had told me earlier that day that the locals just put gasoline in their hair and I thing I bought a bottle of that J But my head is much much better.  Of course I will treat myself again just to be sure, but YAY! It feels so nice not to be itching my head continuously all the time.

Friday night was dinner with the Rheas and movie night J Saturday morning was a special early valentine’s day treat J, followed by a late lunch and then a visit to Haley’s gallery and artist presentations.  After that dinner with the Rheas for Catherine’s birthday! It was chngany (delicious) mexican food! YAY! I was waiting for the invite all week! Sunday I slept in and missed church, but I so needed the rest.   I spent the morning cooking (I’m trying to experiment with learning how to cook food) and emptying the water from my non functioning washing machine (praise god is it working again!).  Then we went off to the city for some shots that Haley wanted and the cruise with New Life.  $2 for a one hour cruise J followed by dinner.  All the friends I wanted to be there were able to come so I was pretty happy! J

Monday started school again and the meetings J  I had to take yesterday off to just study the language.  I was falling behind but felt all caught up in class today.  Today I thought I would have more time to catch up on things but looks like things are busy again. I might be doing a medical camp this Saturday J! Tharanga and I have been talking about doing this for a while so hopefully it will happen J

English classes continue as do nonstop meetings J Everyday books up somehow, but I love it!

Well, I gotto go, there is the update. Basically things are fabulous, the team leaves soon, if anyone wants to come and volunteer and wants to just help me manage everything or help with medical things or has some sort of business idea for the girls, let me know!

God Bless! Hope you had a blessed valentine’s day and this year is filled with a continual knowledge of God’s great love for you!

Day 55

2/4/2012

Feb 4, 2012

So I haven’t written in a while but things have been super busy and super good.  So Monday I realize my team is coming on Wednesday, not Friday like I thought so suddenly I had a lot to do! A LOT!!! The day the team was coming I came home with a mattress on a motorcycle, bread, fruit! It was awesome, too bad no one could take a picture, but I did take one of Michael with the stuff when we stopped. I really was praying I wouldn’t fall off the motorcycle.  It’s easier to sit three people on it than to put a mattress there.  I was so happy to see Haley and Joey.  The last day the stove, washing machine and fans came in.  All my hard work cleaning was ruined. I was go go go and was just stressed about them coming, but just hugging them when they came was enough to let go of all the stress. Hehe! When they arrived the sheets were still wet and not even put on, the boxes were all over the house, there was a puddle from the washing machine not getting installed properly and the hot water heater wasn’t in.  But it’s Haley. Hehe! So I didn’t have to worry, I knew she would understand :)

We stayed up super late, but praise God the sheets were almost dry when we slept in them :) The mattress was more comfortable than I thought it would be, but my pillows are way too soft :) I went to school totally exhausted and barely made it through class. My poor student was like, “You are really tired today.”   I bought some stuff coming back and was worried because they had nothing to eat in the house and figured they must be starving, but instead they were on their hands and knees cleaning the house!!!

We went out to eat and then I left them there while Michael and I went shopping for fruits and vegetables in this really cool market.  While I was walking I saw a long snake like fish jump out of a dry basket and start squirming on the ground.  It was quite interesting. I had left my phone with Haley or else I would have totally taken a picture.  I loved the prices.  One lady tried to talk fake English with me.  We got home just in time for them to go to English class :)

I love having the break! But it lasted a day and then I was there yesterday teaching :) It was supposed to be first aid, but it ended up being a real lesson and then an intro of Haley.  I sent Haley and Joey to an outreach to the guys who frequent women and came home and visited the rheas.  They were so happy to see me and so was I.  It felt like ages since I had seen them, but really it was only 2 days. :) I doctored a burned friend, chatted and then watched a movie, went home and unpacked and just fell asleep when they came home.

My house lock has stopped working so this morning I got it fixed, locked myself out of my room (all I had to do was pull the door closer to me and I could have unlocked it J). But because I was stuck outside I made lunch for tomorrow. A real disasterJ.  The good thing was that I was so hot the cold shower felt warm :) Actually I loved my day. It’s 7:30 and I think I will go to sleep. I so need the rest and it’s perfect, I will start the week out right now! :)  so I just came over to the rheas and Catherine is so sweet.  She’s still a vegetarian and when we were both hungry we both simultaneously decided on nutella sandwiches but there didn’t look like there was going to be enough and she insisted on making me a toast first.  There ended up being enough for even Monichea but wow, what amazingly sweet kids.  I am so blessed to have them in my life.

God bless you all! I just love how everything works out so perfectly.  Monday things will get busy and tomorrow is the bible study.
